>FAQ<
What is OilEx?
OilEx is an officially certified, non-toxic product made from 100% hydrophobic natural fiber. OilEx is lighter and easier to handle than mineral oil absorbents.
What do types I, II, III and R mean?
The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety
tests all oil absorbents according to their range of use. Every accredited oil absorbent in
Germany is divided into these categories:
Type I - Water, Type II - Ground, Type III - Industrial Purposes
Type R - Streets, Traffic Areas
What is OilEx’s range of use?
OilEx absorbs gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, motor oil, vegetable oil, synthetic lubricants as well as all other liquids containing mineral oil. OilEx fast and effectively absorbs liquids containing mineral oil on the ground as well as on the water.
What are the advantages of using OilEx?
The most significant advantage is that OilEx can be applied on both the ground and on water. OilEx is easy to use and that it does not require specially trained staff to apply the product. Its good absorption capability ensures fast results for a large range of uses. OilEx is effective after 1-2 seconds and absorbs approx. 2 ½ times its own weight. This volume may vary due to which hydrocarbon is being absorbed. OilEx retrains odors and reduces combustible vapors, reducing the chance for explosions by 90 %. Using OilEx also saves landfill space, which in turn decreases disposal costs (spills require much less OilEx than mineral products). OilEx is non-toxic and will not harm the environment.
How do I apply OilEx?
The use of OilEx does not require specially trained staff or expensive equipment. Simply scatter OilEx over the spilled liquid. After a few minutes the saturated absorbent can be removed with a broom and shovel. For spills on traffic areas, a careful and thorough cleaning is important. On the water, OilEx (and the absorbed oil) can be removed or skimmed off with suitable equipment. If the spill is not cleaned up completely, repeat the process.
How should OilEx be disposed of?
The disposal method generally depends on the substance that was absorbed by OilEx. Proof
of the absorbed substance must be available. OilEx is to be disposed of according to local,
regional and federal regulations of the respective countries.
As a pure natural product, OilEx can be disposed of in a normal landfill together with all non-
hazardous materials.
OilEx can also be burned. The material has an ash ratio of less than 2% of its original volume,
which represents a valuable, recyclable waste. The heating value is more than 20,000 kJ/kg
and thus exhibits values similar to wood pellets. When hydrocarbons (oil) are absorbed, the
heating value is considerably higher.
OilEx undergoes natural, microbiological decomposition.
Will OilEx leach out the absorbed hydrocarbon?
As soon as OilEx has fully absorbed the hydrocarbon, it will not be released in the ground. Microbes found in the soil will break down the hydrocarbon to its most basic elements.
Is OilEx biodegradable?
Yes, OilEx is 100% biodegradable. Bacteria not only disperse the absorbed oil but also completely degrade it biologically, without leaving harmful residues behind. OilEx’s organic nature allows substances in a controlled composting process to become decontaminated, making them ecological and able to be effectively given back to nature.
Where is OilEx processed and packaged? What package sizes are available?
OilEx is harvested in Lithuania and undergoes a special drying process before it is packaged. OilEx is available in 50 L bags or in bulk as a big bale. Each bag weighs approximately 6 kg (13 pounds). Other package sizes are available when purchasing in bulk.
How many liters can one bag of OilEx absorb?
One 50 L bag of OilEx can absorb approximately 18 liters (~4 gallons) of liquid.
Can I store OilEx?
OilEx is suitable for storage and has a shelf life of at least five years. Store OilEx in a dry area!
